Bayer 04 Leverkusen beat Qarabag Agdam in the Europa League. Attacker Patrik Schick saves the Werkself at the last second with his hits.

It was an evening that probably no one will forget in Leverkusen: Bayer 04 made it to the quarter-finals of the Europa League on Thursday (14.03.2024) at the last second against Qarabag Agdam. Werkself prevailed with 3:2 (0:0) and can continue to hope for a title in international competition. Also in the first leg Bayer had been 0:2 behind – and in the end played 2:2.

Substitute striker Patrik Schick scored two goals in injury time to save his team from their first defeat of the season.

“I am very happy. This is no coincidence, this has already happened four to five times this season. We have an incredible team spirit.”, said Schick.

Leverkusen dominant, but Iglesias does not hit the goal

The Leverkusen team started the game very dominantly. In the first eight minutes, Bayer striker Borja Iglesias had four promising finishes, but each lacked the necessary precision.

Unlike in the first leg, when there was the first defeat of the season after a 0: 2 deficit, coach Alonso refrained from an extensive personnel Rotation.

This should pay off at first, because the Werkself did not need any time to find the game. Only: the accuracy in The Conclusion also left much to be desired for the rest of the Leverkusen. Piero Hincapie (9. Minute) and Amine Adli (10.) also failed in short succession with their graduation attempts.

Bayer player Hofmann has to leave the field injured

As a result, the guests from Azerbaijan came into the game better and a more open game developed. Again and again, the team of coach Qurban Qurbanov tried to come to success with counters.

Bayer had bigger problems with Qarabag and also had to survive some tricky situations in the first half. To make matters worse, offensive player Jonas Hofmann had to leave the pitch due to muscular problems after just under half an hour.

Many wrong decisions

Bayer 04 also seemed far-fetched, the sovereignty of the previous weeks had disappeared. At the beginning of the second half, the Rhinelanders immediately tried to build up pressure again and score the lead goal. But also Exequiel Palacios ‘ shot (48.) narrowly missed the target.

The Leverkusen again laced Qarabag, ran again and again. But Florian Wirtz and Co. he made the wrong decisions too often to win.

Guided tour of Qarabag and red card

And while it continued to leave the factory itself lacking in determination, Qarabag struck ice-cold. Abdellah Zoubir (58.) completed a precise counter-header to make it 1-0 for the Azerbaijan team.

Qarabag weakened alber five minutes later when defender Elvin Cəfərquliyev brought down Jeremie Frimpong on a Leverkusen counter. Referee Anthony Taylor recognized an emergency brake in it and showed red (63.).

But Qarabag was by no means negatively influenced by this, on the contrary. Just four minutes later, Juninho increased from close range to 2-0 (67.) for guests.

Frimpong meets for Bayer

However, as so often this season, the backlog freed up forces at Bayer. After the flank of the substitute Alejandro Grimaldo, Frimpong converted to 1: 2 (72.).

This was followed by a game for a goal, the Werkself tried everything again to achieve the equalization – and attacker Patrik, as already in the first leg, scored in the last Minute to make it 2:2 (90.+3). That’s not all: Schick headed the 3:2 (90.+ 7) and sent the entire stadium in Leverkusen into ecstasy.
