What lasts a long time is finally going to be good: Max Eberl starts on March 1st. On March 16, he got his Job, for which he had actually been intended for half an eternity. The 50-year-old Lower Bavarian is the new sporting director of FC Bayern. Cooperation between these parties had been announced for years – now it is actually official.

Max Eberl: from FC Bayern Youth to professional football

The rumors always persisted. FC Bayern wanted to send Max Eberl to FC Bayern. And Uli Hoeneß never really tried to invalidate them. Regularly, the former President of the German record champion praised the work of the Ex-professional. And so it was quite an open secret that Hoeneß actually wanted to entrust his inheritance to Eberl if he and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge would retire from active day-to-day business.

Eberl, who moved to FC Bayern at the age of six, was trained in football there and eventually even made his professional debut, had started as a junior coordinator at Borussia Mönchengladbach after his active career and worked his way up to sports director there. As such, he had led Gladbach to the Champions League with intelligent Transfers and a good team composition, quickly earned a good reputation – and aroused the interest of Hoeneß and FC Bayern.

Max Eberl will be officially introduced on Tuesday,11 a.m. BR24Sport shows the press conference with the new Sports Board in the Livestream.

Teure Error correction: More than 15 million for severance payments

But the first courtship of the Munich resistance Eberl. Hasan Salihamidzic and Oliver Kahn took over the responsibility in Munich. “A mistake”, as Hoeneß would later say after the spectacular dismissal of the two functionaries – especially with regard to Kahn.

Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff also called Eberl’s commitment a” mistake”. After his emotional departure from Gladbach due to a fatigue syndrome, the Bundesliga player had signed Eberl. Although he did an excellent job in Leipzig, he again proved a good hand in Transfers – but the persistent rumors about an FC-Bayern interest he had not met decisively enough to the taste of Mintzlaff.

And Eberl, too, is likely to classify his signature under the Working Paper on lawn ball sports as a mistake in retrospect. FC Bayern paid five million euros to Leipzig to compensate for this. Together with the severance payments that the club is said to have paid to Kahn and Salihamidzic, the error correction cost the Munich team around 16 million euros.

Dante, Reus and Simons: Eberl is considered Transfer experts

So not a cheap undertaking. But it is not difficult to understand why the Munich team really wanted to give Eberl the sporting responsibility. The 50-year-old is said to have an excellent hand in match commitments: Dante, Marco Reus, Granit Xhaka, Christoph Kramer, Max Kruse, Lars Stindl, Matthias Ginter. The list of his successful transfers in Gladbach is long. During Eberl’s tenure, Tony Jantschke, Marc-André ter Stegen and Patrick Herrmann made their breakthrough. And in Leipzig, among others, Loïs Openda and Xavi Simons immediately struck.

Friend: “always had a good exchange”

The hope is that Eberl will complement well with sporting director Christoph Freund, who only came to the Isar from RB Salzburg in the summer. Freund also has a knack for young players, an eye for talent and the ambition to promote his own youth players. “We have known each other for a long time, already in his Gladbach days we had to deal with the Transfers of Martin Hinteregger and Stefan Lainer. Max has been in Business for a very long time and has a lot of experience. We always had a good exchange,” said Freund in November about the man, who is now officially his new boss.

The Munich team has two experienced sports officials who – unlike their predecessors Kahn and Salihamidzic-are very familiar with the business side of football and have a lot of experience in negotiating large Transfers.

Eberl and the important coaching question

Eberl must demonstrate this Expertise immediately after his arrival. After the early separation from coach Thomas Tuchel, which will be completed in the summer at the latest, FC Bayern urgently needs a Coach who fits the club and team again. Seven coaches in eight years is not the claim of the record champion. Continuity is needed with the most important employee of the Association.

Unlike his player transfers, Eberl was not always right in his coaching decisions. He promoted André Schubert and, despite the lack of Success, held on to him for a long time. The expensive recruitment of the then Frankfurt coach Adi Hütter also turned out to be a misunderstanding in retrospect. On the other hand, he brought successful coach Lucien Favre to Borussia and, despite sporting successes, replaced Dieter Hecking with Marco Rose. A move that Eberl described as” the most difficult decisions of my managerial career”.

The squad of FC Bayern im Umbruch

Eberl has to get used to it. Because decisions that he has to make at FC Bayern regularly have the potential to exhaust state affairs. With the contracts of Joshua Kimmich, Leon Goretzka, Leroy Sané and Alphonso Davies expiring in 2025, important performance leaders from Munich are in for groundbreaking discussions. The squad is in upheaval. Not only because the careers of club legends Thomas Müller and Manuel Neuer are nearing their end, but also because the squad structure has not been entirely coherent for years.

A consequence of the undecided course, which the leadership of FC Bayern is responsible for in its changing Constellation. Here, too, Eberl should bring continuity-perhaps the most difficult task for the 50-year-old. Because, as the past seasons have shown impressively, managers at FC Bayern have to tread a fine line between their own Vision and the favor of the club’s superiors around Uli Hoeneß, if they want to prove themselves in Munich.

The duo Freund-Eberl holds explosive power

A key to success could be Eberl’s media expertise. Especially at Borussia Mönchengladbach, the lower Bavarian often acted as the club’s mouthpiece. A task that the Munich team has left almost entirely to their coaches since the withdrawal of Hoeneß. In addition to their coaching duties, Thomas Tuchel and his predecessor Julian Nagelsmann often had the task of commenting publicly on complicated club matters without support from the official level. Eberl could at least partially take over this in the future.

Success is not set in stone with the Eberl staff. There are concerns that go along with the staff. Also because Eberl’s New, most important employee friend did not necessarily react euphorically in the summer, when the Eberl rumors got a breath of fresh air after his departure in Leipzig. And so far, the two have met at eye level in negotiations, now Eberl is the supervisor and will need a lot of tact to keep this relationship intact.

Arriving at the new and old home

Fortunately for Eberl, this is considered one of the great strengths of the new Sports Board at FC Bayern. At Borussia Mönchengladbach, he was considered an extremely popular manager, which also fits the family Image of the record champion.

But now Eberl must first arrive in Munich. He doesn’t have too much time for that. After all, it is not only the decisive weeks of the season, the search for a coach, but also a groundbreaking transfer period and perhaps the biggest upheaval of the past 20 years. How good that Eberl knows the Säbener Straße from his time as a youth player. Although a lot has changed since 1994. At that time he left FC Bayern after 15 years for VfL Bochum. It would be a success for everyone involved if his second term in Munich lasted just as long.
