Second division football club HSV has released coach Tim Walter. The Club confirmed this on Monday a few days after the 3:4 defeat in the North duel against Hannover 96. Steffen Baumgart is considered a possible successor.

“After the disappointing home defeat against Hannover 96, we made a situation analysis and came to the decision that we need to make a change so as not to jeopardize our goals for the season,” said Sports Director Jonas Boldt. “Our performance fluctuations in the past games have been too great and we lack the full conviction that we will achieve the necessary balance and stability in our game in this constellation in the coming weeks.”

Tim Walter would have liked to stay

Walter himself thanked “HSV, The Office and the extraordinary Fans for more than two and a half years of great cooperation” and added: “I would have liked to have further contributed to achieving our goal of the season together.”

Before Christmas, the coach had already been on the sidelines. However, he was once again given the clear task of stabilising his Team by Sporting Director Boldt and sporting director Claus Costa. However, eight goals in the first two home games of the new year against Karlsruher SC (3:4) and Hannover 96 showed: the coach did not get that.

Is Steffen Baumgart coming?

For the 48-year-old, whose contract still runs until the end of the season, his tenure at Hamburger SV ends after more than two and a half years. He had joined HSV in the summer of 2021, finishing third twice in the Second Division. But he could not lead the team to the hoped-for promotion. In 2022, HSV failed in Relegation to Hertha BSC (1:0, 0:2), last year against VfB Stuttgart (0:3, 1:3).

In addition to Walter, his assistants Julian Hübner and Filip Tapalovic were released with immediate effect, Merlin Polzin and junior manager Loïc Favé will initially look after the team on an interim basis and prepare for the away game on Saturday (13 pm, NDR Livecenter) at FC Hansa Rostock.

HSV has announced a press conference for this afternoon (14.15). Whether a successor will be announced remains to be seen. Steffen Baumgart is considered a hot candidate. The 52-year-old, who will take the 1st place by the end of 2023. FC Köln trained, is an avowed HSV Fan and is reportedly ready for an Engagement in Hamburg.

Most successful HSV-Zweitliga coach

In the past 40 years, there have only been three coaches in Hamburg with a longer tenure than Walter: Ernst Happel (1981-1987), Benno Möhlmann (1992-1995) and Frank Pagelsdorf (1997-2001). Walter averaged 1.82 points per game in 103 games, which is the best value in Hamburg’s second division history.

That is why there were also words of praise from Boldt at The Farewell: “Tim and his boys lived our HSV, fully identified with the task and the Club and played a significant role in shaping the path we took. With his energy and conviction, Tim has also taken on far more tasks than usual for a head coach.”
