Evil whistles from the South Stand had to endure the players of Borussia Dortmund after the 2:3 (1:1) defeat against TSG 1899 Hoffenheim. The BVB had missed the Chance to cement fourth place in the Bundesliga with an error-prone home appearance.

After first painting Donyell (21. Minute) and Nico Schlotterbeck (25.) according to two Standards, the early backlog by Ihlas Bebou (2.), the guests hit back in Passage two. Maximilian Beier (61., 64.) put Hoffenheim up 3-2 in three minutes with a double, marking their first win of the calendar year.

BVB coach Edin Terzic spoke in the Sportschau Interview from a “totally indebted” Defeat. “We have very often invited the opponent to become dangerous today. Almost every dangerous Situation was after Ball loss.”

A turnaround for Hoffenheim?

Hoffenheim’s coach Pellegrino Matarazzo said: “Victories in Dortmund are good, especially after not winning so many games in a row. I see this game as a Momentum Changer: it will continue, we will continue to work hard next week and want to win again at home against Bremen.”

The BVB maintains fourth place with 41 points, but missed the Chance to set themselves apart from the fifth-placed Leipzigers (40 points). The previously seven-game winless Hoffenheimer are now seventh with 30 points.

Can error results in 0:1

The game started terribly for Dortmund. The central defender Emre Can missed a cross pass towards Schlotterbeck. Bebou splashed in between and finished 1-0 after less than two minutes with a nice slant shot from the right.

But after less than a quarter of an hour, Dortmund picked up the pace. Especially the very dynamic painting in this Phase repeatedly caused danger on the left side. A first attempt by the Dutchman swept 1899 goalkeeper Oliver Baumann, but still strongly past the goal (20.).

Two BVB Standards, two goals

After that, Dortmund was clearly in the upswing and also scored the equalizer. A Brandt corner from the left extended Marco Reus at the first post. Malen switched the fastest in the five, walked energetically towards the Ball and pushed it into the net for his tenth goal of the season.

Only a little later, the hosts had turned the game with another Standard. Reus perfectly lifted a free kick from the right penalty area to the head of Schlotterbeck, who headed it in for 2:1.

Dortmund is not doing enough offensively

At first, the BVB seemed to be rich. Until the break, the Black-Yellows switched to control, and since Hoffenheim did not get into switching moments at first, it went into the cabins with a deserved BVB lead.

In the second half, the hosts did not manage to build up pressure for a long time. Hoffenheim defended solidly and lurked on counterattacks.

Hoffenheim countered eiskalt

This paid off after just under an hour, when Florian Grillitsch sent Beier on the trip after a ball win on half-links. He shot to Schlotterbeck after a lunge in from 18 meters, which was unsustainable to 2:2. And when a little later Beier was on hand again after another counter with his tenth goal of the season to score 3:2, it finally looked dark for Dortmund.

Against diligently defending guests, the BVB, as often in the games before, did not think much on the way to the opponent’s goal. The overall inconspicuous Niclas filling Jug (75.) significantly warped a shot from half-left. Luck did not come to the aid of the hosts either: when Marcel Sabitzer shot Grillitsch in the penalty area, the team of referees did not decide on Handelfmeter (82.).

Can miss last chance for BVB

BVB coach Edin Terzic changed offense in the final phase and Can (90.+3) had the Happy ending on his head after a free kick in injury time. But completely detached, Borussia’s captain headed over the goal.

Dortmund are now facing an “away double” in the Bundesliga. The next Saturday (02.03.2024, 15.30 clock) goes to Union Berlin, a week later to Werder Bremen. The Hanseatic League opened on 24 September. 1899 Hoffenheim as a guest (Sunday, 5.30 pm).
