I’m sure you remember the iconic 1993 film starring Bill Murray ‘The Day of the Groundhog’, well, the picturesque tradition shown in the film is as real as it is celebrated even today.

Today, February 2, Groundhog Day has been celebrated, which in the United States represents a tradition as special as it is curious. But, what does this tradition consist of and why is it carried out?

The main protagonist of this story is a groundhog named Phil who lives just outside the town of Punxsutawney, in Pennsylvania, United States.

Phil has a big responsibility on his back and that is that, every February 2nd, when he wakes up from his hibernation, he is in charge of predicting whether we will have an early spring or 6 more weeks of winter.

How do you know this? Well, if Phil comes out of his burrow to see his shadow and, going back inside the hole means that you have predicted 6 more weeks of winter, but, if you do not detect any shadows, it means that spring will arrive earlier than expected.

After a lively festival in which all the inhabitants of the town participate and which brings together more foreigners every year, Phil has proceeded to come out of his burrow and give his verdict. And this year he has predicted that spring will come early!

With this verdict in our knowledge it only remains to wait for the winter to end and check if Phil’s prediction is true, as it has been in previous years.
