The VfL Bochum has taught FC Bayern Munich the next defeat in the Football Bundesliga with great fighting effort. The team of coach Thomas Tuchel has thus conceded the third mandatory match in a row.

The cheers were deafening, players and Fans of VfL Bochum could hardly believe their luck. The Ruhrgebietsklub won on Sunday evening (18.2.2024) after a big fight against FC Bayern Munich with 3:2 (2:1). With this, coach Thomas Tuchel’s team should have slipped into a veritable crisis after the third consecutive penalty shoot-out.

While the Bochumers were able to score unexpected points in the relegation battle, FCB’s gap to table Leader Bayer 04 Leverkusen has now increased to eight points.

Bavaria’s Goretzka: “like in a horror movie”

“It was a very intense game. An enormously awesome game. We stand here with three points. The whole of Bochum is proud of us”, VfL midfielder Kevin Stöger told The Sportschau. “In the first round we got a real slide. Maybe it was something like a reparation.”, said VfL defender Keven Schlotterbeck.

Munich was extremely disappointed. “We let the Bochum people do what they wanted. We just didn’t have the right answers on the pitch.”, said Bayern midfielder Leon Goretzka. “It feels like a horror movie right now. It’s all against us. The next few days will be restless.”

Coach Thomas Tuchel seemed disillusioned. “Today I feel the defeat is extremely unfair. It’s all gone wrong what could go wrong“, said the 50-year-old of the Sports Show. Tuchel said: “I’m a football coach, I’m not afraid of anything.”

Tuchel will continue to coach in Munich

Bayern CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen made a commitment to the heavily pressured Tuchel immediately after the defeat. The question of a change of coach does not arise, said Dreesen. “I don’t think anything of these monstrous coach endorsements. I know what you want to hear, but those loyalty oaths are over after a week. That’s why I say it my way. This is not a topic we are currently dealing with. We need to focus on The Next Games.”

When asked if Tuchel would also sit on the bench in the next match against RB Leipzig, he replied with”.of course“.

Musiala takes Bayern’s lead

The Bochumers started confidently against the unsettled Bavarians. The team of coach Thomas Letsch went into the duels aggressively and tried to gain respect through first offensive actions. The Bavarians, who initially competed without Leroy Sané (knee) and shooting star Aleksandar Pavlovic (hip), took a few minutes to find their way around and to an orderly game.

So initially a game developed at eye level, in which the Munich players became more and more dominant with increasing duration. And after a multiple chance, Jamal Musiala scored FCB’s lead after 14 minutes. From seven yards, the offensive player got to the Ball and hammered the ball into the mesh of the VfL goal indefatigably.

Protests against the German Football League

Just four minutes later, the Tuchel team should have scored the second meeting, but striker Harry Kane forgave completely alone in front of Bochum goalkeeper Manuel Riemann downright miserably-instead of passing to fellow runner Thomas Müller.

Afterwards, tennis balls flew from the courts onto the Bochum Lawn. The Fan protests against an entry into the German Football League (DFL) lasted around 13 minutes, during which the game had to be interrupted.

Bochum turns the game

However, the Bochumers only really got going after the involuntary break – and turned the game. After a counter, VfL attacker Takuma Asano converted from eleven metres with a placed flat shot from half-right into the long corner to make it 1-1 (38.).

And that’s not enough. The VfL followed suit decisively and was again successful. After a corner kicked by Kevin Stöger, Keven Schlotterbeck headed to the 2:1 (44.) a. Subsequently, the VfL players were carried by this energy and presented problems to the Tuchel Team with a lot of commitment and running work.

Concentrated defensive work of the Bochumers

After the break, things continued so bravely at the Ruhrgebietsklub. Bayern defender Kim was able to stop Asano just at the last Moment, right in front of FCB goalkeeper Manuel Neuer.

The Bavarians also tried to approach the VfL goal dangerously, but failed due to the concentrated defensive work of the Bochumers. Then tennis balls flew again, again the game was interrupted for a three-minute. This time, however, the Munich team was not taken by surprise and increased the pace.

Kane scored the Connecting hits for the Bavarians

The Bavarians tried everything to score the equalizer, but the Bochumers threw themselves into every shot with their last effort – and were successful in their turn. After a corner, Dayot Upamecano had hit his elbow into Schlotterbeck’s face. Referee Daniel Schlager rightly ruled on penalties and also showed the Bayern defender Yellow-Red. Stöger converted from point to 3: 1 (78.).

However, the Bavarians did not want to come to terms with this defeat and ran again in an outnumbered state. VfL goalkeeper Manuel Riemann was able to fend off the first attempt from the substituted Sané, Harry Kane was right on the next attack and dusted to 2:3. But it was not enough for the Bavarians anymore.
